If you’ve listened to our last episode, you know that women are still underrepresented in STEM, and hispanics make up no more than 8% of the people in such fields. Today, the second episode celebrating this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, you’ll learn from a group of latina engineers working to change this scenario for the better.

In this episode, Girls in Civil’s founders elaborate on their own experience going to college in Puerto Rico, and then moving to the US for grad school. If you’re a hispanic in STEM, they’ll walk you through some of the things that have been helping them, including how to find other hispanic people and places to make you feel “at home”.

Also, as hispanic women in the US STEM market, they know what it feels like to be part of the 8% mentioned above. Therefore, these girls also explain their perspective on why diversity in STEM is crucial, as well as some pieces of advice on how you, a hispanic woman or man, can have a successful career in your chosen field as a Latina or Latino without ignoring your background.

Girls in Civil is a movement to empower girls interested in construction-related careers or topics. Founded by Sofia Boscio, Gilmarie O'Neill, Gabriela Yañez, Charmelis Reyes, and Laura Garcia, its main goal is to give girls in STEM a voice and a support system to help them navigate through their careers.

They all got their Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering in Puerto Rico, and are now working for private and public companies, or doing grad school studies in the United States.
