Seven Habits We Need to Learn to Balance

By Luis Duque | Issue #4

Hi friends,

This week I released a solo episode talking about three simple principles to develop and maintain new habits. Did you know that January 19th is considered quitters day? That is when most people tend to fall of track and quit their New Year’s resolutions – but we are not like most people, right?

Side note – do you enjoy the solo episodes over the interviews or vice versa? Or do you appreciate a combination of both? Reply to this email and let me know!

Now, as always, I wanted to share something interesting that I read this past week with you. This article focuses on how seven common mental habits that we typically associate with success can actually be overdone and detrimental to our performance. They are …

  1. Grit
  2. Effort
  3. Routine
  4. Self-discipline
  5. Conviction
  6. Self-monitoring
  7. Freedom

What are your thoughts on these seven mental habits? Like I said, these are commonly identified as great skills or habits to adopt, and I completely agree. I believe that the point of the article really boils down to balance.

As with anything in life we need to find balance in everything we do. From our work to our activities, it is really easy to go overboard (I am talking from experience). I think this concept of balance goes really well with the topic of diversifying I shared about a few weeks ago. Take a few minutes this week to think about how you are overdoing some of these seven mental habits. Are you working too hard on one thing? Are you putting too much effort into something that isn't leading you anywhere? What changes can you make to improve and make a difference?

Broadly my goals for this year are to find balance and to grow. It has been hard to cut back on some activities that I really enjoy, but at this time it is very needed. I am juggling family time, creating the podcast, work, volunteering and now to studying for the PE, and I only have so much time to devote to each of these activities. I have so many great plans for 2021, and I need to focus on the things that really matter. Overall, the article really opened my mind to some of these habits that I have been overdoing and need to get better at balancing.

I hope you are able to identify if you are overdoing it in any of these areas and ways you can find a more balanced life.
